Spanish Conjugations

Spanish conjugations are difficult to learn for English speakers as the verb change is a lot more complicated. There are three different verb endings in Spanish:

  • ‘ar’ verbs (hablar)
  • ‘er’ verbs (perder)
  • ‘ir’ verbs (salir)
For regular verbs there are different rules depending on the verb ending. There are also many irregular verbs in Spanish and these tend to be some of the most common verbs. This means that you have to learn and remember them individually (or within groups). Because they are so common you will probably know some of the conjugations no matter what level you have as you will have practiced them a lot. For example, beginners learn that “Yo soy” and “Yo estoy” are the equivalents of “I am”  and come from the irregular verbs “ser” and “estar.”These are used all the time and are therefore remembered more easily. It goes to show that practice is they key to remembering conjugations.
